Errors and Quiet Bats Hurt Baseball against Franklin Pierce

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing in sunny and cold conditions, the Queens College baseball team (5-5 overall) matched up against East region powerhouse Franklin Pierce University Ravens (7-5 overall) Friday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.

But the Knights were unable to find their offensive rhythm as they left 14 base runners while self-inflicting nine errors throughout both games to drop the non-conference doubleheader at home.

Queens would fall 10-1 in game one, before dropping the nightcap with a 6-1 loss.

The Knights would find themselves trailing 6-0 after two and a half-inning of play. Sophomore Reed Hoskins(Freeport, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R) would start the bottom half of the second frame with a single to right field before freshman Juan De La Rosa (Dominican Republic) (1-4 AB) singled through the right side to advance Hoskins to second. A balk would negate the double play advancing both runners in scoring position. With no outs, the Knights were in a prime position to cut the deficit down to a few runs. However, after the Ravens got the first out, Queens would only be able to get one run home as freshman Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, RBI) grounded out to second base allowing Hoskins to score to from third.

The Knights would leave at least two runners on base for the first seven innings of play as the Ravens continued to work their way out of trouble. Despite out-hitting the Ravens 9-7 in game one, Queens would only muster one run as they dropped game one 10-1.

Game two brought a similar native but it was Franklin Pierce who would tally more hits (12-4) in the nightcap.

After a scoreless first inning, It was the Ravens who got the scoreboard once again to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. But this time the Knights would respond quickly and tie the game 1-1 after two innings of play. Cisco (1-2 AB, 2B, R, BB) started the second inning with his fourth double of the season before the Ravens got the first out with a grounder to second base, but it would advance Cisco 90 feet bringing up junior Colin Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) to bat.

Diez (0-1 AB, RBI, 2BB) would score Cisco to knot the game 1-1 as he grounded out to second base. But the Ravens would respond in the third frame with a three-run inning on four hits to take a 4-1 lead heading into the home half of the third.

With one out, junior Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (1-4 AB) singled up the middle before a walk put two runners on base, but the Ravens would evade the third inning without any damage to maintain their 4-1 lead.

Queens would get another opportunity to cut the deficit down in the fourth inning but once again Franklin Pierce got out of trouble. A two-run fifth inning for the Ravens would seal the game for the visitors as they swept the Knights with a 6-1 game two victory.

UP NEXT: On Wednesday (Mar. 16) the Knights continue non-conference action in Flushing against the Wildcats of Wilmington University. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
