Game Recap: Baseball |

Missed Opportunities as Baseball Drops Non-Conference DH to Assumption

FLUSHING, N.Y. – A three-game series turned into a Sunday doubleheader as Saturday's weather forecast turned out to be false as the Queens College baseball team welcomed the Greyhounds of Assumption College to Hennekens Stadium.

But the Knights would drop their second non-conference series in a row as the Greyhounds picked up two victories to the score of 7-0 in the opening game, before holding on for a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

An offense that was sizzling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is struggling to find the sweet spot of the barrel in Flushing March chilly conditions as the Knights left a total of 20 base runners Sunday afternoon.

Queens was shutout for the first time this season as they left 11 runners on base in the game one loss.

After three complete innings of play, the game was scoreless before the Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead on two fielding errors in the top half of the fourth. As the home side continued to leave runners on base, the visitors kept the runs coming.

Trailing 6-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Knights had their chance to cut into the deficit but the offense would leave the bases loaded to end the seventh before eventually dropping game one 7-0.

In game two, the Knights would find themselves trailing 1-0 after the top half of the first but tied the game quickly as junior Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) rounded the bases on wild pitches to even up the game.

Assumption would reclaim the lead right away on a solo shot to left field in the top half of the second inning. Queens would get a chance to tie the game up in the bottom half of the third as the Knights earned two walks but the Greyhounds worked out of trouble leaving Knights runners stranded on third and first.

As the Knights pitching staff did their best to limit the damage and keep them in the game, the offense continued to struggle. A deficit of 3-1 grew to 5-1 as the opportunity to come back in the game started to fade.

Down to their last six out, Queens got a run back off the bat of freshman Juan De La Rosa (Dominican Republic) (1-4 AB, RBI) as the rookie drove in a run in the bottom half of the eighth inning but it would the closest the Knights would get as they dropped the nightcap to the score of 5-2.

UP NEXT: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights hit the road for the first time as they travel to Rutherford, N.J. with a non-conference matchup against Felician University Golden Falcons. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
