Amanda Giordano was victorious in the 100-yard individual medley competition as the Queens College women's swimming team won its first contest under the direction of Head Coach
John Yearwood on Thursday (Nov. 14) at the Dina Axelrad Perry Pool in Flushing. The Knights won a 156-80 decision over St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in a tri-meet that also included Kean University; Queens fell by a 136-105 score to Kean in a competitive dual in the pool.
The Knights got off to a fast start in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Giordano,
Gabriela Almeida,
Megan Dawes and
Chelsy Espinosa swam a 2:03.68 medley; Kean, however, out-touched Queens by nine-hundredths of a second to pick up the win. Dawes won the 200-freestyle race in a time of 2:09.46 while Almeida earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly along with the 100-yard butterfly on a night honoring her as a mid-year senior graduate. Giordano's time of 1:12.47 in the 100-IM brought QC closer to Kean before the final event.
Other top-tier results for the Knights came in the 50-yard freestyle as Espinosa finished fourth (28.55) while
Gabriella Vicidomini claimed a fifth-place finish overall in a time of 35.22 seconds. Dawes took second-place in the 500-free in a time of 5:48.63 while Giordano was third (35.73s) in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Brigitti Cruz was runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 32.13 seconds and Giordano took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.09).
Queens returns to action on Monday (Nov. 18) as the Knights face Hunter College in the North Pool in Manhattan at 6 p.m.
