Softball Concludes Season Against NYIT

FLUSHING, N.Y. - In sunny and cool Sunday afternoon conditions, the Queens College softball team completed its 2016 season by dropping both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader against NYIT. The Knights dropped game one 5-1 before losing game two 6-1 thus ending their postseason hopes to defend their 2015 ECC crown.

Game One:
The Knights opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as freshman Maryjane D'Agostino drove home junior Kayla Morrissey with a sacrifice fly to center field to take 1-0 lead. Queens was unable to score again as the innings progressed. With a 1-0 lead heading into the seventh inning and with the postseason three outs away, NYIT rallied. The Bears tied the game with a sacrifice fly from Kat Zabielski to score Kat Bejarano-Moreno. An error on the QC infield gave the Bears 2-1 lead as Amber Butenhoff reached home. Tiffany McCracken put the game out of reach as she blasted a three run home run to center field to take a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore ToniMarie Valeriano (7-11) took the loss in the circle allowing seven hits, one earned run while striking out three. Laura McLaughlin (19-7) picked up the win for the Bears, allowing five hits and one run.

Game Two:
The Knights were unable to rally after the Bears added five runs in three innings. Junior Stevianne Ognibene homered to left center to cut the lead 5-1 to give the Knights some hope. However, Queens were shut down by Bears starter Carly Wade (9-7) who allowed only four hits and one run in five innings of work. Junior Morgan Starley (5-4) took the loss in the circle allowing 10 hits and six runs.

Queens finishes the season 14-23 overall, and 11-17 in ECC play, while NYIT improved to 35-11 overall and 24-4 to become 2016 East Coast Conference regular season champions.
