LIU Post Takes Two From Knights In ECC Tilt

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - On a cool and sunny afternoon, the Queens College softball team (11-20, 8-14 ECC) suffered a setback to their postseason hopes as they dropped an East Coast Conference double header to the LIU Post Pioneers (26-7-1, 15-1 ECC). The Knights lost the season series 3-1, but handed the Pioneers their only conference loss thus far.

GAME ONE: 

The Knights found themselves in early trouble down 9-0 after three innings. Hoping to storm a comeback, sophomore ToniMarie Valeriano singled up the middle to score classmate Alyssa Neal and freshman Lauren Pascual. Pioneers pitcher Ashley Martin walked junior Kylie Spillet to score freshmen Nicole Michaels to cut into the deficit 9-3. The Knights were unable to make any further progress in game one.

Valeriano (6-9) took the loss giving up nine runs, 10 hits and struck out four. Martin (12-4) got the complete game win in the circle, limiting the Knights to five hits, three runs while striking out seven.

GAME TWO:

After three tight innings, the Pioneers broke out in the bottom of the fourth by taking a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers added two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. The Knights responded in the top of the sixth with a Pascual double to left center to cut into the deficit 5-1, driving home Spillet. However, Queens was unable to do any more damage.

Pascual (2-7) took the loss in the circle giving up five hits, and five runs. Pioneers starter Hannah Olshevski (14-3) got the win by holding the Knights to three hits and one run.

UP NEXT: The Knights return to action Tuesday afternoon in East Coast Conference action against the Golden Lions of Dowling College from the Golden Lions Field with game one slated at 2:30 pm.
