Box Score 2 BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - On a sunny and cool afternoon, the Queens College softball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the Bridgeport Purple Knights Wednesday afternoon at Seaside Park. The Knights rallied from behind to win game one 5-3 before coming up short in game two 3-2. Queens improved to 10-17 overall, and 7-11 in league play, while Bridgeport moved to 12-22 and 6-12 in ECC play. The Knights won the season series 3-1 for the third season in a row.
GAME ONE:
After two innings, Queens found themselves in a 2-0 deficit, but cut the deficit in half after sophomore Victoria Carlo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score junior Kylie Spillet. Paige Owens singled to right center to score Kaila Crandall to increase the UB lead to 3-1 after four innings. Junior Stevianne Ognibene started the comeback rally in the top of the sixth inning with a single to center field to score classmate Kristen Boody. Next batter, Carlo singled to right field to drive in the game winning runs as Ognibene and junior Kayla Morrissey crossed the plate. Sophomore ToniMarie Valeriano closed out the scoring with a single to left field to drive in freshmen Lauren Pascual.
Queens starter Valeriano (6-7) picked up the win by limiting the Purple Knights to five hits and three runs. Alyssa Bua (5-8) took the loss giving up eight hits and five runs in five innings pitched.
GAME TWO:
Queens found themselves in the same 2-0 hole after three innings but rallied back to tie the game. The Knights cut the deficit in half as freshmen Nicole Michaels singled to left field to allow Carlo to score. In the top of the seventh, Pascual tied the game with her first home run of the season to keep the Knights hopes alive for extra innings.
Knights starter junior Morgan Starley (3-3) took the loss giving up nine hits and three runs with the game winning run coming in the bottom of the seventh. Lajoie Kaitlyn (5-8) got the win for the Purple Knights as she limited the Knights six hits and two runs.
UP NEXT: The Knights return home Friday afternoon for an East Coast Conference Doubleheader against The Golden Lions of Dowling College (8-24, 2-14 ECC) with game one slated for 3:00 pm.
