Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team split a non-conference double header with Pace Thursday afternoon. The Knights won game one 2-1, but came short in game two 2-1.
GAME ONE:
Junior Kylie Spillet blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Queens starter Morgan Starley ran into trouble in the fifth inning as she loaded with the bases with no outs. Surina Sandhu tied the game at one with an RBI groundout, bringing home Hannah Kowalski. Starley was able to get out of the sticky situation as Cristen Whigham grounded out to sophomore Victoria Carlo.
Setters pitcher Kaitlynn Nelson allowed a single to junior Stevianne Ognibene to open the bottom of the seventh inning. Carlo's sacrifice bunt allowed Ognibene to advance to second. A grounder by freshman Deanna Burbridge was misplayed on the QC infield, allowing Ognibene to score the game winning run from second base.
Starley (2-1) pitched a complete game to earn the win as she struck out a career high seven, while allowing four hits and one earned run. Nelson (6-3) took the loss as she limited the Knights to five hits, one earned run and struck out six.
GAME TWO:
The Setters kicked off the scoring in the fourth inning, plating an unearned run. Pace doubled their lead in the sixth inning as Lindsey Ah Soon homered to left field off Lauren Pascual which eventually proved to be the winning run.
Hoping to pull off a second seventh inning rally, Alyssa Neal doubled to left field with one out. Carlo would then come back to run for Neal and advanced to third as Valeriano grounded out to the pitcher. Carlo then scored on a wild pitch to bring the Knights within one.
Valeriano despite taking the loss (4-4), pitched an exceptional game as she struck out eight, and allowed one hit. Jaclyn Flores (4-2) held her nerve to pick the win as she held the Knights to two hits, and struck out six. Flores faced the minimum through the first six innings.
