Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team captured both ends of an East Coast Conference double header with Bridgeport Saturday afternoon at QC Softball Field. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to capture a 2-1 win in the opener, before a six run inning in game two catapulted QC to a 9-2 win.
In the opener, the Purple Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Jenna DiLorenzo. UB starter Alyssa Bua stifled the QC bats through the first six innings, scattering four hits while striking out eight.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Deanna Burbridge (Mahwah, N.J.) set the tone with a one-out single, her second hit of the game. Junior Kylie Spillet (Yaphank, N.Y.) reached with a two-out walk, while freshman Lauren Pascual (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Junior Stevianne Obnibene (West Islip, N.Y.) also was hit, this time with the bases loaded, bringing in Burbridge with the tying run. Sophomore Alyssa Neal (Paramus, N.J.) followed with a walk off single to right field, scoring pinch runner Maryjane D'Agostino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) with the winning run.
After entering with one out in the top of the seventh, junior Morgan Starley (Windsor, N.Y.) was credited with the win, the first of her career. Bua fell to 1-5 on the year with the loss.
In game two, the Knights jumped to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double to center by Pascual. Bridgeport evened the contest in the top of the fourth, before a home run by DiLorenzo in the top of the fifth pushed the visitors ahead by one.
In the bottom of the inning, junior Kristen Boody (Centereach, N.Y.) evened the score at two with a double to center, scoring sophomore ToniMarie Valeriano (Bellmore, N.Y.). After a walk to Burbridge, Morrissey connected on a home run to center, her second of the season.
Later in the frame, Ognibene plated Pascual with a double, before coming around on a single by Neal. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights extended the lead on Valeriano's two run home run to left center, her first of the campaign.
Pascual went the distance for the win, her first of the season. The right handed hurler allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out a career high 10.
The Knights are back in action Monday afternoon, for an ECC tilt at NYIT (2:30 pm).
