Knights Top Mercy In ECC Action

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team picked up its first East Coast Conference victory of the season Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Mercy.  Game two of the double header was suspended due to darkness with the Knights and Mavericks knotted at four after 10 innings.

In the opener, Mercy got on the board in the top of the second inning in game one on a home run by Joelle Salisbury.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Knights plated the go ahead runs courtesy of RBI hits by junior Kristen Boody (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman Deanna Burbridge (Mahwah N.J.).  Boody drove in sophomore Alyssa Neal (Paramus, N.J.) from second with an infield single.  Burbridge followed with a triple to right field, scoring pinch runner Maryjane D'Agostino (Franklin Square, N.Y.).

Sophomore ToniMarie Valeriano (Bellmore, N.Y.) (3-3) picked up the win for QC, allowing five hits and one run over seven frames.  McKaily Cusumano took the loss, allowing five hits and the two runs over six innings.

Game two will be completed Apr. 10, before the second ECC double header between the two squads.  Queens is back in action Saturday afternoon against Bridgeport.
