Box Score 2 ORLANDO, FLA - The Queens College softball team continued early season action Saturday at Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports. In game one of the day, the Knights fell to Illinois Springfield 4-1. Game two saw QC fall to North Georgia 8-0, number one in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll and the reigning NCAA champions.
Trailing 3-0, the Knights had their best chance to get back in the fifth inning when Kayla Morrissey connected on a one-out single and Kristen Boody followed with a double to left field. Prairie Stars starter Jaycee Craver was able to set aside the next two QC hitters by way of groundout. QC got on the board in the seventh with an unearned run.
Illinois Springield tallied two runs in the first inning, as Madi Torry scored on a triple by Amanda Gosbeth. Gosbeth later scored on a single by Alexa McClaughry. Brittany Miller then added the third run with a third inning home run and the fourth run was scored in the sixth.
Queens starter ToniMarie Valeriano took the loss, while Craver picked up the win.
In game two, the Nighthawks scored three runs in both the first and second frames, to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Another run came across in the fourth inning on an RBI triple by Kelly Kahlert. North Georgia then ended the game in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Katie Block.
Queens was held to just two hits in the game by the North Georgia pitchers. Victoria Carlo reached with a first inning single and Boody singled in the fifth.
Lauren Pascual suffered the loss for the Knights, allowing 10 hits and seven earned. Courtney Poole was the winning pitching, allowing just hits while striking out eight in five innings. Brianna Michaud pitched the final frame for the Nighthawks.
QC completes its opening weekend Sunday afternoon against Dominican (N.Y.) at 12:15 pm.
