Softball Wins Second Straight with 7-6 Triumph Over Holy Family

Flushing, N.Y. - Though game two would be halted due to darkness, the Queens College softball team hosted Holy Family and finished the first game, a 7-6 win by the Knights, on Thursday in Flushing.  Isabelle Yaroch got her first start since going down to an injury in Florida earlier this season.

 

The Annandale, Virginia product tossed two shutout innings before being taken out of the game for upstart freshman, ToniMarie Valeriano.  Valeriano threw the final five innings, gave up just one earned run, got the win and improved to 7-4 on the season.

 

Queesn took a 1-0 lead in the second when Samantha Mattsson roped a double to right center.  She moved to third on a single from Kylie Spillett and came in on an RBI base hit from Jeannie Callanan.

 

One inning later, QC scored four runs to make the lead 5-0.  Alicia Gonzalez worked a one-out walk and stole second.  Valeriano and Monique Roberge followed with walks and the bases were loaded without a hit.  From there, SteviAnne Ognibene walked and drove in Gonzalez.  A Mattsson single through the left side plated Valeriano and made the score 3-0 for Queens.  Spillett folowed with a 2-RBI single to right that scored Roberge and Ognibene.  Queens led 5-0 after three innings.

 

The Tigers rallied to score twice in the fourth and thee times in the sixth to even the score at 5-all.  After they lost the lead, the Knights responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Nicole Pirretti led off with a walk.  Cat Paster followed with a single to right.  They both moved up on a passed ball.  Gonzalez then put QC up 6-5 with an RBI ground out that brought in Pirretti.  Roberge followed with what turned out to be the game-winning RBI on a base hit up the middle that scored Pastor.  Holy Family scored once in the seventh but lost, 7-6.

 

In the win, Roberge, Mattsson and Spillett had two hits apiece.  The team returns to action on Saturday, April 11, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
