Softball Moves to 7-2 in Conference with Doubleheader Split at Dowling

Oakdale, N.Y. – The Queens College softball team moved to 13-14 overall and 7-2 in East Coast Conference play with a doubleheader split at Dowling on Wednesday.  The Golden Lions took the opener, 5-3, but QC rebounded to take the second game, 11-7.

 

The Knights took a 2-0 lead in game one with a run in the first and second.  Alicia Gonzalez ripped a single through the right side.  She moved to second on a ground out.  Monique Roberge scored her with a base hit.  In the second, Samatha Mattsson reached on a single.  She later came in on a Nicole Pirretti sacrifice fly.


Trailing 2-0, Dowling scored one in the second and two each in the third and fourth to take a 5-1 lead.  Queens rallied late and plated a run in the sixth.  SteviAnne Ognibene reached on an error.  She moved to third on a base hit from Jeannie Callanan.  Pirretti picked up her second RBI with a single to left.  The Knights lost game 1, 5-3.

 

In the opener, Gonzalez and Roberge had two hits and Pirretti had two RBI.  ToniMarie Valeriano got the complete game loss and fell to 6-4 on the season.

 

Queens rebounded in game two, winning 11-7.  Roberge was 3-3 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and five RBI.  She also got the complete-game victory in the circle.

 

Queens took a 1-0 lead in the first when Gonzalez singled and stole second.  Roberge drove her in with a base hit later in the frame.  Dowling tied the game in the bottom of the first, and scored twice in the second to lead 3-1.  The Knights responded with five runs in the third.

 

Cat Pastor hit a solo homerun to left.  Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and Valeriano singled.  Roberge followed with a three-run-blast to center, giving QC a 5-3 lead.  Mattsson reached on an error and stole second.  Kristen Boody singled to right to score here and Queens led, 6-3.

 

A solo homerun from Dowling in the bottom of the third made the score 6-4 until the Knights scored two runs in the fifth.  Roberge led off with a solo homer.  Ognibene walked and stole second.  Boody moved her to third with a base hit and Kayla Morrissey drove her in with a single.  The Knights now led 4.

The Golden Lions scored three in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 8-7, but Queens put the game away by scoring three times in the sixth.  Ognibene had an RBI single and the Knights got two more unearned runs.  They went on to win 11-7.

 

The Queens College softball team returns to action on Thursday, April 9, when they host Holy Family for a doubleheader.  The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
