Box Score 2 Bridgeport, Conn. - The Queens College softball team swept a doubleheader from the Bridgeport Purple Knights on Monday, winning game one 7-3 and taking the final, 5-0. The Knights slugged four homers across the two games.
Queens won the opener 7-3 behind strong pitching from ToniMarie Valeriano. She threw 6.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 6-3 on the season.
QC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Cat Pastor led off with a homerun. Alicia Gonzalez reached on a walk and two batters later, Monique Roberge blasted another homer to put Queens up 3-0. Stevianne Ognibene scored the fourth run of the frame off an error.
Bridgeport got two back in the bottom of first to pull within 4-2. Queens scored three more runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead.
With one out in the third, Valeriano walked. Two batters later, Ognibene reached on an error. From there, Samantha Mattsson blasted a three-run-homer over the wall.
The Purple Knights rallied to score a run off Queens reliever, Morgan Starley. But they got no cloer as the Knights won 7-3.
In game two, the Knights took a 2-0 lead by pushing a pair across in the fourth. Ognibene reached on an infield single and stole second. She came in to score on a passed ball. The second run came from a Kylie Spillet single that plated Mattsson.
QC added three more in the sixth. Pastor walked and Kristen Boody singled to put two runners on base. Gonzalez blasted her first homerun of the season and the Knights went on to win 5-0.
Roberge got the win for the Knights. She scattered five hits and struck out 11. The Knights host Molloy in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
