QC Softball Outscores Dowling 13-0 in Doubleheader Sweep on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Flushing, N.Y. - It was a trio of victories for the Queens College softball team on Saturday.  For starters, they celebrated Senior Day prior to the start of the doubleheader with Dowling.  Then they swept the Golden Lions by scores of 6-0 and 7-0.  Finally, those wins ensure them a tie for first heading into Sunday's doubleheader with LIU Post.  If they split with the Pioneers, the Knights would finish first, as they  hold the tiebreaker over Post.

Prior to the start of game one, the softball coaches and team honored the five seniors, Cat Pastor, Nicole Pirretti, Isabelle Yaroch, Samantha Mattsson and Monique Roberge.  The five all had standout careers and were playing their final regular-season home games on Saturday.  They were presented with photos, flowers and framed jerseys.

In the game, Yaroch threw a two-hit shutout.  She struck out seven in as many innings.  Pastor scored a run in the first when she singled and got to third on an error.  She came in on a wild pitch.  Queens added two more runs in the third.  Alicia Gonzalez laced a single up the middle.  From there, ToniMarie Valeriano put a homer down the left field line and QC led, 3-0.

The Knights finished the scoring in the sixth with three runs on three hits.  Roberge and Mattsson reached via base hits.  Kylie Spillett blasted a homer to center and Queens led 6-0.

Game two had Roberge toss a complete-game, one-hitter.  She struck out 13 and walked five.  Queens took a 1-0 lead in the second on a single by Roberge, a hit by pitch on Kayla Morrissey and an RBI fielder's choice from Kristen Boody.

QC pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third with three runs on three hits.  The key hit was a single by Morrissey that brought in Mattsson and Valeriano.  They added a run in the fifth on a fielder's choice and two singles.  They capped the scoring in the sixth on a Pirretti double and Gonzalez homer.

Yesterday, the Knights completed the season-sweep of Molloy.  Sunday gives QC the chance to entertain the possibility of first place when they meet LIU Post for a two-game series that will set up the post-season.  If the Knights split, they earn the top spot.
