Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - On a day that featured gale force winds throughout the afternoon, the Knights slugged four homers across a pair of games, to sweep a doubleheader from Molloy, 15-14 and 10-1 (in 5 innings). The two games were both dramatic for Queens, but had very different endings to them.
QC took a 1-0 lead in game one on a single by Stevianne Ognibene and an RBI base hit by Monique Roberge in the bottom of the first. The Lions responded with a run in the second and six more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
The Knights got one back in the bottom of the frame. Samantha Mattsson singled and later came in on a Kayla Morrissey sacrifice fly. The Molloy lead was cut to 7-2.
The Lions scored twice in the fifth push the lead to 9-2. Queens busted out in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times. QC loaded the bases on singles from Cat Pastor and Alicia Gonzalez and a walk from Ognibene. From there, ToniMarie Valeriano ripped a double into the right field corner that scored Pastor and Gonzalez. Ognibene came in on an infield hit by Roberge, and Valeriano socred on sac fly from Mattsson. All of a sudden, a 9-2 deficit became a 9-6 gap. But the Knights weren't finished.
Kylie Spillett closed out the inning with a two-run-homer to left and the score was 9-8. It was the second home run of the season for the catcher.
A run by the Lions in the sixth made the score 10-8. but QC regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Paster led off and was hit by a pitch. Ognibene and Isabelle Yaroch reached on errors. From there, Roberge blasted her team-best, eleventh round tripper of the season. The grand slam put QC up, 12-10.
Things looked bleak for the Knights when the Lions responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 14-12 lead heading into the final at-bat for Queens. Nicole Pirretti reached base via fielder's choice and she was on first with two outs for Alicia Gonzalez. Gonzalez, normally a slap hitter, displayed some rare power by tying the came at 14-14 with a two run blast to left that hit the boardwalk by the tennis bubble.
Ognibene and Yaroch each followed Gonzalez with walks. They both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Ognibene scored the winning run on another wild pitch and Queens stole a 15-14 win.
Game two was very different than game one as the Knights offense got busy early and never looked back. Both teams scored a run in the first. Molloy got its run on a solo shot and Queens scored an unearned run.
QC put the game away in the third by scoring seven times. Gonzalez led off with a single to center. Valeriano reached on a fielding error. Roberge then connected on a base hit that scored Gonzalez and moved Valeriano to third. She moved to second when the ball was misplayed for an error. Mattsson laced an RBI single to third that plated Valeriano. Spillett made the score 4-1 with a single to right-center that brought in Roberge. Two batters later, Ognibene drew a bases-loaded walk and QC led 5-1. After that, Jeannie Callanan, who came in for Pastor, roped a line drive to right that scored Kayla Morrissey and Spillett and put Queens up, 7-1. Two batters later, Valeriano had an RBI ground out that scored Ognibene. The Knights led 8-1 after three innings.
Two innings later, QC put the game away with a walk-off hit. Ognibene worked a walk after being down 0-2 in the count. Pirretti followed with a blast over the right field wall to make the score 10-1 and end the game via the eight-run-rule.
