Box Score Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team slugged six homers en route to an important, 9-4 win at Molloy in Rockville Centre on Wednesday. These two sides are battling for position for the upcoming East Coast Conference Championship.
Queens took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Cat Pastor led off the game with a solo shot. Three batters later, Monique Roberge connected on the second homer of the inning. The Lions countered with three runs (including a homerun) in the bottom of the second to lead, 3-2.
The Molloy lead held until the fifth when Queens scored three times to take a 5-3 lead. Kayla Morrissey led off the inning with a solo shot. Two batters later, Nicole Pirretti hit the fourth solo shot of the day, giving QC a 4-3 advantage. Pastor followed with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She came in to score on a ToniMarie Valeriano double to right center.
The Knights picked up a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. With two outs, Morrissey singled through the left side, Stevianne Ognibene singled and Pirretti walked to load the bases. Pastor singled to left, and Morrissey and Ognibene scored.
Molloy scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Knights picked up two more in the seventh. Roberge and Samantha Mattsson hit back-to-back homers to seal the deal.
With the win, Queens is now 25-14 overall and 17-4 in the ECC. The second game was postponed due to weather. These two teams meet in a doubleheader at Queens on Thursday, April 23, at 2:30 PM.
