Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College lacrosse team earned its first win of the season with a 15-0 win over District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference game played on the lacrosse field in Flushing on Thursday. Taylor Martello, Alyssa McCormick, Janet Campo, Courtney Canavan and Mary Pat Gibble all scored for the Knights.
McCormick got the Knights on the scoreboard less than two minutes in action. She possessed the ball on the right side of the goal, rolled across and scored past the goalie on the near side. Less than a minute later, Martello made the score 2-0 when Carly Chierico whipped a past through the defense to Martello in the free position area. She calmly beat the keeper to the near side, low.
Campo made it 4-0 shortly thereafter when she scored from the top of the box. McCormick made it 4-0 after scoring off a failed clear attempt by the Firebirds. Martello got the ball and passed it to McCormick for the goal. Queens went up 5-0 when Campo scored her second of the match.
She got the hat trick when she when across the goal from left to right and found the back of the net on a shot. Chierico found Martello for the seventh goal and an unassisted tally from McCormick made it 8-0.
QC went up 9-0 inside of five minutes when Kelly Cornelius skipped the ball ahead to Martello who beat the defense on a breakaway. She beat the keeper with a high shot. The tenth goal came off a gorgeous pass from Martello to Gibble for her first marker of the day. The final first-half goal came from McCormick and Queens led at the break 11-0.
The Knights put the brakes on in the second half and scored four more times. Canavan scored an unassisted goal barely four minutes into the half. She and Angela Acevedo were rotating in and out of the game regularly. McCormick got the next goal on a free position shot. Campo connected with Martello for a goal to make it 14-0. The final score came on a Gibble free position shot. The Knights won 15-0.
Cornelius picked up a game-high five ground balls and Chierico had four. Queens outshot UDC, 39-6. Krista Ancona and Basma Attiah combined to record the first shutout in lacrosse history at Queens.
The Queens College lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 4, when they host Philadelphia University. The opening draw with the Rams is slated for 1:00 PM.
