QC Softball Splits Doubleheader with LIU Post in Battle of ECC's Top Teams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team split a doubleheader with LIU Post on Sunday from the softball field in Flushing.  Coming into the twinbill, the Pioneers were at the top of the East Coast Conference.  The two split by identical 3-0 scores with LIU Post taking the opener and QC winning the nightcap.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as the Knights only managed two hits, but the combination of Isabelle Yaroch and ToniMarie Valeriano didn't allow an earned run.  The Pioneers got an unearned run in the second and a couple more in the third and went on to win 3-0.  Samantha Mattsson had both of the QC hits in game one.

Game two went to Queens, 3-0.  Monique Roberge pitched a complete-game shutout, improving to 11-5 with the win.  She struck out eight batters in her seven innings of work.

Queens opened the scoring with a run in the fifth.  Nicole Pirretti walked with one out.  Cat Pastor followed with a single that moved Pirretti to second.  From there, Valeriano roped a linedrive right to the second baseman who dropped the ball.  The ball careened away and Pirretti came in to score the game's first run.

Queens added to its lead with two more runs in the sixth.  Kylie Spillett reached first on a fielding error by the pitcher and took second when the defense fell asleep momentarily.  Jeannie Callanan came in to run and she scored on an RBI single to right by Kayla Morrissey.  Morrissey moved to second on a failed pickoff play and came in to score on an RBI single by Cat Pastor.  The Knights went on to win, 3-0.

Things don't get any easier for the Queens College softball team as they host the #3 team in the ECC, Molloy, in a doubleheader on Monday, April 20 beginning at 2:30 PM.
