Softball Pushes Win Streak to Five with Doubleheader Sweep of Bridgeport

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team improved to 23-13 overall and 15-3 in the East Coast Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Bridgeport on Saturday in Flushing by scores of 4-0 and 9-1.  The team is now 12-1 at home and has won five straight games.

 

Isabelle Yaroch threw five shutout innings to earn the win in game one.  She allowed three hits, one walk and struck out five.  ToniMarie Valeriano tossed the final two innings to earn the save.

 

QC scored a run in the second to take a 1-0 lead.  Samantha Mattsson reached on an infield hit.  Two batters later, Kylie Spillett singled.  Stevianne Ognibene walked and the bases were loaded.  Nicole Pirretti singled down the left field line to score Mattsson.

 

The Knights mad the score 2-0 with another run in the third.  Monqiue Roberge blasted a home run over the wall in center.  In the fourth, Kayla Morrissey was hit by a pitch to lead off.  She came around to score on an RBI double from Pirretti.  The final run came in the sixth on three singles from Morrissey, Spillett and Ognibene.  Queens won the opener 4-0.

 

In game one, Spillett was 3-3, while Pirretti and Alicia Gonzalez had two hits each.  As a team, Queens slugged 11 hits.

 

The second game went to Queens 9-1, in five innings.  Queens jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three run homer to left by Mattsson.  Bridgeport got one in the second beore QC scored five times in the fourth.

 

Pirretti, Cat Pastor and Gonzalez all reached on singles.  Valeriano was hit by a pitch and Pirretti scored.  Roberge followed with a walk and Pastor came in from third.  Two batters later, Kristen Boody dropped a single to right and Roberge and Valeriano came around to score.  Morrissey finished the scoring with a base hit that plated Mattsson.

 

The Knights put the game away in the next inning with a run.  Gonzalez singled and got to second on an error.  From there, Mattsson got the walk-off hit with an RBI single to left that scored Gonzalez.

 

The Queens College softball team returns to action on Sunday, April 19.  They face LIU Post in a showdown of the league's top two teams.  The first pitch is slated for noon.
