Stevianne Ognibene Gets Four Hits in Doubleheader Split at NYIT

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday against NYIT in Old Westbury, New York.  They dropped the opener, 4-2, but rebounded to win the second one, 7-2.  Stevianne Ognibene went 4-6 across the two games.

 

The Knights fell behind 2-0 early, as Isabelle Yaroch made her second start after returning from injury.  QC tied the game in the top of the sixth by scoring twice.  Cat Pastor, Alicia Gonzalez and ToniMarie Valeriano all had base hits to open the inning by loading the bases.  From there, Monique Roberge tied the score at 2-2 with a single that score Pastor and Gonzalez.

 

The Bears answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.  But Queens wouldn't go quietly.

 

In the seventh, Ognibene led off with a single through the left side.  Pastor walked and Gonzalez reached on an error and the tying and winning runs were on base.  NYIT got the next batter and won the opener 4-2.

 

The Knights clubbed 14 hits in game two and eight of the nine batters each had at least one hit.  QC took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from Roberge and Ognibene.  They added another run in the second when Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error. 

 

They pushed the lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the fourth.  Pastor was hit by a pitch.  Gonzalez singled up the middle.  Valeriano singled up the middle to score Pastor.  Three batters later, Kylie Spillett ripped a two-RBI single to left.  The Knights collected four hits in the inning.

 

Nicole Pirretti, Gonzalez and Roberge all had singles in the fifth, with Roberge's hit scoring Pirretti.  The Bears scored twice in the sixth, but QC won, 7-2.

 

The Queens College softball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 14, when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York, for a doubleheader with Mercy.
