Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team swept a doubleheader from NYIT in snow flurries in on Saturday in Flushing. The Knights took game one, 8-1, in six innings and won game two, 1-0, in their final turn at-bat. Stevianne Ognibene and ToniMarie Valeriano each had walk off hits for Queens.
Game One:
Queens slugged 13 hits in the opener, en route to nine runs. Seven players in the lineup had at least one hit. The Knights scored three times in the first. Alicia Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and got third on a base hit from ToniMarie Valeriano. Monique Roberge put the Knights up, 1-0 with a ground out that scored Gonzalez. SteviAnne Ognibene then singled to left to score Valeriano make it 2-0 for Queens. Sam Mattsson hit a ball to the wall that was misplayed and allowed Ognibene to score the third run of the inning. From there, Valeriano took over in the circle.
After allowing a leadoff single in the first, Valeriano retired nine in a row to blank the Bears through three innings. Up 3-0, QC added two more in the third as Roberge and Ognibene went back-to-back with solo homers. Mattsson also connected on a double in the frame.
NYIT finally got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth. QC responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Mattsson reached on an infield single and stole second. Kylie Spillett followed with a double and the Knights had runners on second and third. Nicole Pirretti put QC ahead, 6-1, with an RBI ground out.
Queens put an end to the game in the sixth by scoring three more times. Cat Pastor led off with a double. Gonzalez then beat out a bunt for a single. She advanced to second on a ground out. Roberge ripped a single to center that scored Pastor and Gonzalez to make the score 8-1. Ognibene then ended the game with an RBI single that scored Roberge and made the score 9-1.
In the win, Ognibene had three hits, three RBI and scored a pair of runs. Roberge drove in four with a couple of hits. Valeriano improved to 4-2 with the complete game win. She walked one and struck out four in six innings of work.
Game Two:
Game two was a pitcher's duel that saw the Knights prevail, 1-0, in their final at-bat. Roberge threw a complete-game two hitter. She stuck out ten to improve to 3-4 on the season.
Kayla Morrissey led off the seventh with a single up the middle. Pirretti advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. Pastor reached on an infield hit. Gonzalez then put runners on second and third for Valeriano, who won the game with a single that scored Morrissey for the 1-0 win.
The Queens College softball team returns to action on Sunday, March 29. They host Mercy for a doubleheader that begins at noon.
