Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team improved to 6-7 overall and 3-0 against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Georgian Court from Flushing on Sunday. The scores of the games were 8-3 and 4-0.
The Lions jumped out a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second. The key hit was a 2-RBI single and the third run came in on a wild pitch from Monique Roberge.
The 3-0 lead lasted until the bottom of the fifth, when the Knights used the long ball to score four runs. Stevianne Ognibene led off the frame with a solo blast to left. Alicia Gonzalez followed with a walk. Samantha Mattsson singled to advance Gonzalez. Two batters later, Roberge blasted a three-run-homer over the wall to put Queens ahead 4-3.
The next inning saw QC break the game wide open. With two outs, the team scored four times on five straight hits. Ognibene and Gonzalez reached on singles. Mattsson tipped a two-RBI double to left that scored Ognibene and Gonzalez. ToniMarie Valeriano followed with a two-bagger to center that scored Mattsson and made the score 7-3. Finally, Roberge singled to left that plated Valeriano.
Roberge finished with four RBI, two hits and got the win in the circle. Ognibene was 3-3 and scored twice.
Valeriano took the circle in game two and struck out seven in six innings of work. She earned her fourth win of the season. Morgan Starley pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save. The Knights scored three times in the first on an RBI hit from Nicole Pirretti and a bases loaded walk from Kylie Spillett. The team added a run in the second on an RBI single from Roberge. The team went on to a 4-0 shutout.
The Queens College softball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 25, when they face St. Thomas Aquinas in a doubleheader from Sparkill, New York. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
