Taylor Martello Scores a Game-High Four Goals in Season Opener with Chestnut Hill

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - Queens College lacrosse came a long way in season one of Head Coach Todd Kaiser's leadership.  Season two got underway on Tuesday, with an 11-10 loss to Chestnut Hill, in a competitve and evenly matched game that saw Taylor Martello score a game-high four goals.

 

Martello opened the scoring with a goal nearly three miuntes into action to put the Knights up, 1-0.  Four minutes later, newcomer Mary Pat Gibble hooked up with Alyssa McCormick for a maker that put Queens up, 2-0. At the 20:30 mark, Martello picked up an assist as she found Angela Acevedo cutting to the middle.  Queens was up 3-0, nine and a half minutes into action.

 

The Griffins finally got on the board halfway through the first half on a free position goal.  QC responded with a pair of goals from Martello and Giblle to jump out to a 5-1 lead.  Assists on those goals went to Gibble and McCormick.  Chestnut Hill scored again to make it 5-2. McCormick made it 6-2 with an unassisted goal.  The Griffins scored to make it 6-3, but Queens scored twice more in the final 90 seconds of the half.  Martello fed Gibble for a goal to make the score 7-3 and Martello scored with 0:31 left off a pass from Janet Campo.  The Knights led 8-3 at the half.

 

QC took its largest lead of the game, six goals, when Courtney Canavan hooked up with Campo at the 26:48 mark of the second half to make the score 9-3.  From there, the Griffins scored six unaswered tallies to tie the game at 9-9 with 5:32 remaining.

 

Things took a good turn for the Knights when Canavan found Martello for her fourth goal of the game.  The marker gave Queens a 10-9 lead with 3:26 left.  Chestnut Hill scored the two final times in the match for an 11-10 win.

 

In the game, Martello had four goals and two assists.  Gibble had two goals and a pair of helpers.  McCormick scored twice and added an assist.  In goal, Kristen Ancona turned aside 13 shots.  The Knights, now 0-1 on the season, return to action on Saturday, March 14 at Bridgeport.  The opening draw is slated for 1:00 PM.
