Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - Queens College junior pitcher, Monique Roberge, made history on Friday by throwing her second no-hitter of the year, a 5-0 win over Adelphi, in the opening game of the NCAA East 2 Regional, held at Adelphi's campus in Garden City. She tossed a no-hitter against St. Thomas Aquinas on April 12, but Friday's no-hit-bid was the first in the NCAA Tournament for the Knights.
Queens jumped out to the early lead in the game as Cat Pastor led off the game with a double to left field. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit from Roberge.
Roberge, who is from the next town over from Garden City, New Hyde Park, took the circle already having given herself a 1-0 lead. She retired the first two batters. The third batter, Victoria Wink, lifted a line drive to center that was misplayed for an error. Wink got to second on the play, but was stranded there. Roberge then retired the next 11 in a row, before she threw a comebacker over the head of Lindsey Lichtenberger for an error in the fifth inning. Only two batters reached base all game for the Panthers.
QC put the game away with four runs in the fifth. Kaitlyn Crowley led off with a double. The Knights got runners on the corners when a Nicole Pirretti sacrifice bunt was misplayed for an error. Alicia Gonzalez them loaded the bases with a bunt single. After an out was recorded on a fielder's choice, Pastor scored Piretti with an RBI single to center. Melissa Natale made it 3-0 with a base hit that plated Gonzalez. Roberge picked up two more RBI with a single that drove in Pastor and Stevianne Ognibene. Queens led 5-0.
Roberge retired the Panthers in order in the sixth and the seventh. She was aided by strong defense from Samantha Mattsson, who made three catches running into foul territory, Ognibene who ran a country mile to flag down a fly ball in the seventh, and Natale, who made a terrific catch for the second out in the seventh.
In the win, Roberge struck out five and allowed just a pair of base runners, both on errors. At the plate, the junior had game-highs in hits (two) and RBI (three). Pastor scored twice and also had two hits.
The Queens College softball team returns to action on Saturday, May 10, when they face Caldwell at 10:00 AM. Both teams are in the winners bracket, as Caldwell defeated Georgian Court earlier on Friday.
