Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team opened Saturday's elimination day with a 5-2 loss to Caldwell in the winner's bracket game of the East 2 Regional from Adelphi in Garden City, New York. Nicole Pirretti blasted a home run to account for both Knights runs.
Isabelle Yaroch took the circle for QC and failed to record an out against the Cougars, facing the first three batters and surrendering a pair of walks and a double. Monique Roberge came in to relieve Yaroch. Caldwell scored three times in the first to lead 3-0.
The Cougars made the score 5-0 after two innings, getting runs on a single and a steal of home. Queens would finally get on the board in the fifth innings.
Kaitlyn Crowley led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. Nicole Pirretti followed her and blasted a two-run-homer over the wall in left-field. The Knights pulled within 5-2, but didn't score again as Caldwell went on to win 5-2. Besides the hits from Pirretti and Crowley, Samantha Mattsson had a double in the game.
The second game was delayed 90 minutes at the start due to a storm that passed through the area. The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run. The Knights nearly tied the score in the second when Kayla Morrissey lifted a ball to the warning track in left.
Sara Schendel led off the third with a double up the alley in right-center. Alicia Gonzalez came in to run for her and moved to third on a fly out. Mattsson tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI line drive to center. The game was then delayed for the second time due to lightning.
Eventually play was suspended with two outs in the third. The game will resume from that point on Sunday at noon. The loser is eliminated and winner will immediately face Caldwell.
