Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team rallied in the opening game to win 6-4, in nine innings, but fell in the rubber match, 3-2. Monique Roberge earned a complete-game, extra innings win in the opener and hit a home run in the night cap.
The Knights fell behind in the opener 3-0 as the Panthers scored twice in the first and once in the second. Queens got a run back in the third when Cat Pastor led off with a single. Melissa Natale laid down a bunt and beat it out for a hit. Pastor moved to third on a fielder's choice and Roberge helped herself out with a sacrifice fly that scored Pastor. Adelphi went ahead, 4-1, with a run in the fifth.
Queens was down its last at-bat when the bats finally came alive. Stevianne Ognibene led off with a double. Pastor followed with an infield single. Natale singled to left and the bases were loaded. After an out was recorded, Roberge ripped an infield single that scored Ognibene and got QC to within 4-2. Kayla Morrissey then tied the game with a fielder's choice that was misplayed by the second baseman which allowed a pair of runs to score.
Roberge then retired the next six batters to keep the game even at 4-4 until the Knights came to bat in the ninth. Natale laced a one-out single to center. Roberge drove her in with an RBI double. Morrissey made the score 6-4 with a base hit that scored Roberge. The Panthers went in order in the ninth and QC won 6-4.
In the game, Natale led the Knights with four hits. Roberge, who threw all nine innings for her 14th win, had three RBI.
Game two started with Queens taking a 2-0 lead. After the first two batters were retired, Samantha Mattsson had an infield single. Roberge followed with an opposite-field homer that made the score 2-0, Queens.
Adelphi pushed a pair of runs across in their half of the first and the game was tied at 2-2. a walk and a single in the third gave the Panthers another run and a 3-2 lead. That lead held up the rest of the way for the 3-2 win.
Queens is now 31-16-1 overall and 18-9-1 in East Coast Conference play. The ECC Championship is slated to begin on May 1 from LIU Post.
