Queens College Collects 31 Total Hits in Doubleheader Sweep of NYIT

Flushing, N.Y- The Queens College softball team improved to 30-14 overall and 18-8 in East Coast Conference play as they defeated NYIT by scores of 6-5 and 9-1 in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. In the two games played, the Knights put on a hitting clinic; as they finished with 16 hits on the first game and 15 in the second. Samantha Mattsson had home runs in both contests.

The Knights got on the board in the first inning of the game one when Monique Roberge had an RBI, scoring Catherine Pastor. Mattsson then scored on a throwing error, giving Queens a 2-0 lead.

NYIT would score five runs on three hits in the top fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. The Knights responded in the bottom forth on five hits and an RBI each from Pastor and Mattson to even the game at 5-5.

In the bottom sixth inning, Mattsson fired a homer to left field, which turned out to be the winning run for the first game, a 6-5 QC victory.

Pitcher, Isabelle Yaroch, came out of the bullpen to earn her 15th win of the season in the opener.

The Knights continued their superb hitting in the second game scoring one run, respectively, in each of the first four innings of play; which included a home run from Melissa Natale in the bottom of the first. QC would then score three runs in the fifth keyed by a Morrissey home run off the tennis bubble in left field.

Heading to the sixth with a7-1 advantage, the Knights' Mattsson finished the game with a two-run home run to left center, leading to a 9-1 victory.  Yaroch went the distance for her 16th win in game two.

The Queens College softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 26, in its last home games of the regular season, a doubleheader against Molly. The first game against the Lions will start at noon the senior day ceremonies will take place prior to the first pitch.
