QC Softball Outscores NYIT 14-2 in Doubleheader Sweep of Bears

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team scored 14 runs to sweep NYIT in a doubleheader on Wednesday in Old Westbury, New York.  The Knights took the opener 5-1 and won the nightcap, 9-1.

The first game featured a pair of strong starting pitchers as neither side got a hit until the fourth inning.  The Bears reached QC starter Isabelle Yaroch for an infield single, while the Knights had Samantha Mattsson get a base hit off of Money Ormsby.

NYIT scored the first run of the game in the fifth.  Briana Romero scored on a Kristina Rozelle sacrifice fly.

The Bears led 1-0 heading into the Knights' final at-bat.  Mattsson led off the seventh with a game-tying home run to left.  Later in the inning, Nicole Pirretti got the game-winning RBI with a single that scored Alicia Gonzalez.  Kaitlyn Crowley then sealed the game-one win with a three-run-homer to put the Knights up 5-1.

Yaroch retired the Bears in the seventh without allowing a run and the Knights took the opener, 5-1.

Game two saw the Knights prevail, 9-1, in five innings.  Queens came out slugging in the first inning, as they opened the scoring with a two-RBI single from Monique Roberge.  Later in the inning, Kayla Morrissey blasted a homer to put QC ahead, 4-0.  Finally. Stevianne Ognibene hit a double that drove in a pair, and Queens had a 6-0 lead after an inning.

Roberge made the score 7-0 with a solo shot in the second.  Lichtenberger connected a two-run blast, and QC led 9-0 after three innings.  The Bears got a run in the fourth, but lost 9-1.

Roberge got the win and improved to 9-1 on the season.  The Knights hit five homers in the two games.

The QC softball team returns to action on Thursday, April 3, when they host Bridgeport.  The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
