Box Score 2 Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team imporved to 26-12 overall and 14-6 in the East Coast Conference with a pair of 5-2 wins in a doubleheader against Mercy in games played in Dobbs Ferry, New York on Thursday. Monqiue Roberge and Samantha Mattsson each had homers in the doubleheader.
Roberge, the reigning ECC Pitcher of the Week, had a hot bat in game one, going three-for-three with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Kayla Morrissey and Kaitlyn Crowley each had three hits as well.
THe Mavericks took the lead in the first on a sacrifice fly. Queens countered in the second with a run on three straight singles from Roberge, Morrissey and Crowley. Two innings later, QC took the lead on an infield single from Nicole Pirretti that scored Morrissey; who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Mercy tied the game at 2-2 with another run in the bottom of the fourth. The game remained there until the Knights scored three times in the seventh on a Roberge homer and an RBI double from Pirretti.
Isabelle Yaroch threw a complete game and improved to 13-6 with the win. She struck out a pair in the game.
Queens wouldn't have to come from behind in game two as they scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 3-0. The run in the fourth came when Melissa Natale singled and scored on a Mattsson double. The next inning, Stevianne Ognibene singled and scored on a Catherine Pastor double. Pastor came in on a Mattsson base hit.
Mercy scored twice in the sixth to pull iwthin 3-2, but Queens scored again in their final at-bat. Pastor connected on her second double of the game and Mattsson homered to make the score 5-2.
Roberge went the distance to improve to 13-3 on the season. She struck out 11.
The Queens College softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 19, when they face Bridgeport in a doubleheader in Connecticut. The Knights took both games when they met earlier in the season, and QC outscored the Purple Knights, 15-0, in those games.
