Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - Meeting for the first time since Mercy knocked Queens out of the East Coast Conference playoffs and steal the final spot in 2013, the two sides met again in a doubleheader from Flushing, on Wednesday. Nothing was resolved as the two teams split the games and the stalemate will continue later in the season in Dobbs Ferry.
The Mavericks took the opener, 3-1, even though Isabelle Yaroch threw a strong outing for the Knights. The game was scoreless through the first four innings. The Knights pushed across a run in the fifth.
Stevianne Ognibene led off the frame with a double down the left field line. She advanced to third on a Catherine Pastor sacrifice bunt and came in to score when Samantha Mattsson grounded out to second base. Queens led 1-0 after five innings.
The Mavericks answered with three runs in the sixth as Jackie Coulliard ripped a two-run-homer and Julie Gross had an RBI double. QC failed to score in the sixth or seventh and Mercy had a 3-1 win.
The second game saw Queens starter Monique Roberge take a no-hitter into the fourth. She tossed a two-hit shutout and won, 2-0.
The Knights got both of their runs in the second on an RBI fielder's choice from Nicole Pirretti and an RBI double from Pastor. Roberge shut them down the rest of the way.
The Queens College softball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, when they face NYIT in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
