Clermont, Fla. - The Queens College softball team opened its 2014 campaign at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Florida on Monday. In a non-conference match-up, the Knights fell to Georgian Court, 9-0, in five innings. Nicole Pirretti had a double in two at-bats.
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the third inning where Georgian Court scored twice. Justine Mattia singled up the middle. She moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on another wild pitch. The second runner scored when Kelly Hardiman connected on an RBI single. The Lions led 2-0 after three innings.
Georgian Court plated seven more runs in the fourth inning keyed by five QC errors. The Knights best chance to score came in the fifth when Nicole Pirretti connected on a two-out double to right. Alicia Gonzalez followed with a walk. Pirretti moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there.
Georgian Court won via the eight-run-rule in five innings, 9-0. Besides Pirretti's two-bagger, Kayla Morrissey got her first career hit with Queens. Isabelle Yaroch was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just three earned runs.
The QC softball team returns home next week where they will host their first home game in a double-header against Chestnut Hill. The first game will begin at 1:00 pm.
