Box Score 2 Flushing, (N.Y.) – The Knights softball team continued their East Coast Conferene schedule with a split against the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans at home. They defeated STAC 3-1 in game one, but fell to the Spartans 4-3 in game 2. The split puts Queens at 2-2 in ECC play and 14-8 overall.
Game 1:
The Knights got on the board early with a first inning run courtesy of a passed ball by catcher ToriAnn Groth. They would build off that lead in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles by both Monique Roberge and Kayla Morrissey. In the pitcher's circle, Isabelle Yaroch (7-4) pitched a complete game for the victory. The junior ace out of Annandale, Virginia allowed just one earned run on four hits while punching out eight.
Game 2:
With a two game winning streak heading into game two with the Spartans, QC would get off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a Cat Pastor RBI double that sailed over the head of Katie Meyers in center. Meyers would single in the top of the fourth which led to a Spartan run as rightfielder Nicole Pirretti's throw home skipped past Kylie Spillett allowing Samantha McDonald to even the game up at 1.
Queens would untie things when Kayla Morrissey smashed her sixth home run of the season, a shot that hit the top of the tennis bubblle beyond the bleachers in left field. The two run blast put the Knights up 3-1 after four innings.
In the top of the fifth, QC freshman starter Morgan Starley ran into trouble and surrendered three runs, which would put STAC up for good 4-3. Samantha McDonald (1-1) earned the win after relieving Kim Nowak in the middle of the fifth.
The Knights get back to action this Saturday, March 29th, as they travel to NYIT for a matchup against the Bears in an ECC contest. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
