Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team split a doubleheader against American International on Sunday, dropping the first game, 4-3, but winning the rubber match, 7-1. Catherine Pastor and Alicia Gonzalez each had a hit in both games for the Knights. Queens is now 12-6 on the season.
The Knights quickly got on board during the bottom of the first inning in game one as Pastor scored on a wild pitch. QC allowed only two hits going into the top of the fifth inning while maintaining that 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the top of the fifth to take a3-1 lead. The key hits were a single from Lyndsey Letourneau and a double from Haley Marchand. American International finished the fifth inning with three runs, three hits, and left two on base.
AIC got another run in the seventh to lead 4-1, but QC rallied in the bottom of the frame. Kaitlyn Crowley started out with a double to left field and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Samantha Mattsson, singled to left field, scoring Crowley. Two batters later, Pastor singled up the middle, driving in Mattsson. The Knights had the tying run on base, but were unable to even the score and the Yellow Jackets took the opener, 4-3.
In the second game, the Knights scored in the first inning when Pastor started out with a single to left and later scored on a wild pitch.
QC was made the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth on four hits, including an RBI each from Kylie Spillett and Mattsson. The Knights finished the game with two more runs as they won 7-1.
The Knights will start their first conference double-header when they visit Dowling on Tuesday, March 25. The games are slated for 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm.
