Sweep of Bloomfield Pushes Softball Win Streak to Six Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team pushed its win streak to six games with a sweep of Bloomfield on Tuesday in Flushing.  The scores of the games were 3-1 and 7-0.

The opening contest saw the Knights jump out to the early lead when Kaitlyn Crowley blasted a homerun over the wall in left to put QC ahead, 1-0, in the second inning.  The Deacons tied the score in the top of the third inning.

Queens put the game away in the fifth by scoring twice.  The Knights loaded the bases on a bunt single by Stevianne Ognibene and a pair of single from Catherine Pastor and Melissa Natale.  From there, Monique Roberge lifted an inside pitch over the second baseman into right field for a 2-RBI single that scored Ognibene and Pastor.  Queens led 3-1.

QC starter Isabelle Yaroch retired the Deacons in order in the seventh and the Knights won 3-1.  In game one, Yaroch went the distance for the win.  She allowed three hits and struck out six.  Roberge had a couple of hits to match her 2 RBI.

Game two was scoreless until the Knights came to bat in the bottom of the third.  Samantha Mattsson, Pastor and Natale all singled to load the bases.  Sarah Schendel got QC on the board with a walk that forced in Mattsson.  Roberge followed and blasted a grand slam homerun to left.  Queens led 5-0.

Roberge collected her fifth RBI of the game two innings later with an RBI base hit that plated Natale.  The Knights' final run came when Alicia Gonzalez was out stealing second, but Mattsson stole home on the back end.

In the 7-0 shutout, Roberge gave up two hits in the complete game win.  She struck out 12 batters and had three hits at the plate.  Pastor and Natale had two hits apiece.

The Queens College softball team returns to action on Thursday, March 20, when they host Southern Connecticut State.  The first pitch with the Owls is slated for 2:30 PM.
