Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. - The Queens College softball team is in the midst of a Florida road trip and on Sunday, March 9, the team split a pair of games, falling to the University of Mary, 3-2 and defeating Assumption, 6-5. Nicole Pirretti continued her hot start by collecting two more hits against the Greyhounds and one against Mary.
In the loss to Mary, Queens got on the board first. With two outs and runners on first and second, Pirretti ripped an RBI single up the middle that scored Kayla Morrisey. Two batters later, it was Samantha Mattsson who put a ball back through the box to score Cat Pastor and put QC up, 2-0.
Mary responded in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs to even the score at 2-2. Demaree Rodriguez had a two-RBI single to tie the game. They added a run in the sixth to go on for the 3-2 win.
The second game of the day pitted Queens against Assumption. Pirretti and Melissa Natale led the Knights at the plate with two hits each. The Greyhounds took the lead in the top of the second, on a two-run-homer and an RBI base hit. QC responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Morrisey connected on her first homerun of the season, and StevianneOgnibene drove in the second run on sacrifice fly.
Assumption added a run in the third to lead 4-2, but QC scored three times in their half to take a 5-4 lead. Natale led off with a walk. Sara Schendel reached on an error, and Monique Roberge blasted a three-run-homer to account for the runs.
The Grey hounds tied the score at 5-all with a run in the fourth, but Queens took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Pastor reached on an error and moved to third on a Pirretti base hit and scored on a wild pitch. Queens won 6-5.
The team has a pair of games on Monday, beginning with West Liberty at 3:00 PM and them they face Wayne State at 5:00 PM.
