Knights Softball Splits Twinbill Against University of Bridgeport

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bridgeport, Conn.  (April 6, 2013) - The Knights softball team visited the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights for an East Coast Conference doubleheader. The Knights took game one from UB 4-2, and fell in game two 5-2.

Game One

It took a 4-run sixth inning by the Knights offense to come back and beat the University of Bridgeport.  Down 2-0 entering the sixth, Knights centerfielder Melissa Natale rapped a leadoff double to right field. Sara Schendel followed suit with a run-scoring double to left, which plated the Knights first run of the game against Bridgeport pitcher Jennine Walsh. With one out in the sixth, Kaitlyn Crowley singled home Schendel to tie the game at two. With Crowley off first and one out in the inning, Nicole Pirretti drilled a two-run home run to left off Walsh (5-5) which capped off the scoring and gave the Knights a 4-2 advantage.

Queens would not look back as game one starter Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va./Annandale)  held Bridgeport scoreless the rest of the way. She threw her 10th complete game of the season and earned her fifth win.  She struck out five batters and didn't allow a walk in her start. She allowed two runs (none earned) on five hits in the pitcher's circle.

The win boosted the Knights ECC record to 6-4.

Game Two

Queens College was unable to get by the University of Bridgeport in game two, falling to the Purple Knights 5-2. The Knights offense came courtesy of a bases loaded wild pitch by Bridgeport's game two starter Tiffany Irrera (5-6) in top of the fourth and a sacrifice fly RBI by Sara Schendel, which drove in Kellie Zeitler in the fifth.

In the pitcher's circle, Nicole Turato recorded her fourth complete game of the season, going six innings in the contest. Turato (3-7) allowed five runs (three earned), struck out five and walked just two.

The Knights record in the ECC is now 6-5.

The Knights visit ECC opponent LIU Post on Tuesday April 9th in Brookville, N.Y. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 PM.
