Box Score 2 Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team
entered Tuesday's doubleheader with NYIT with a chance to
move up in the East Coast Conference standings and in the end, the
team spilt a doubleheader with the Bears as they took game one,
10-1 and lost the nightcap by the same score.
Game
One:
The Knights got on the scoreboard early in game one as Sara
Schendel (Seattle, Wash.) doubled into the left field corner.
She moved up on a Monique Roberge (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) single
through the infield. Kaitlyn Crowley (Patchogue, N.Y.) then
put the Knights up 1-0 with a single that scored Schendel.
Two batters later, Cat Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) drove in Roberge with
a base hit in the infield.
One inning later the Knights turned a 2-0 lead into an 8-0
advantage by scoring six times. Melissa Natale (Yaphank,
N.Y.) put Queens up 3-0 on an RBI groundout that scored Kellie
Zeitler (Holtsville, N.Y.). Schendel ripped her second double
of the game to make it 4-0 and Crowley followed with another double
to make it 5-0, Knights. Pastor drove in another run after an
infield grounder and Carla Pennolino (Middle Village, N.Y.) put the
Knights up 8-0 with a two-RBI single to right-center. QC
scored six runs in the inning.
The Bears got on the scoreboard in the top of the third as they
scored a run with a single, an error and a groundout. So, the
Knights led 8-1 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, Nicole Pirretti (East Northport, N.Y.) reached on
a single and Pastor blasted a home run over the wall in right
center. After the homer, QC led 10-1.
Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.) retired the Bears in order in
the fifth and the Knights won, 10-1, via the eight-run-rule. The
Knights ripped 14 hits in the game, with Schendel going 3-3 with a
pair of runs scored. Pennolino finished with four RBI and
Crowley and Pastor each drove in a pair. Yaroch pitched the
entire game to earn her fourth win of the season.
Game
Two:
NYIT got the better of the Knights in game two, defeating them
10-1 in six innings. The Knights run came from a Carla
Pennolino solo home run that dinged off the bleachers in
centerfield in the second. The Bears scored two runs in the
fourth, four times in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.
Pastor and Natale each doubled in the game.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 3, when they
host Merrimack in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
