Queens Softball Takes Two Against STAC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team swept their East Coast Conference doubleheader against the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans. The Knights blanked the Spartans in game one, 3-0 and won game two by the score of 3-1.

Game One

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after a bases loaded infield single by Nicole Pirretti plated Sara Schendel.  Queens's offense got a jolt in the bottom of the third when Monique Roberge ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, which scored Melissa Natale.

In the pitcher's circle, Isabelle Yaroch allowed just one hit in seven innings. After a leadoff single in the top of the first, Yaroch went on to retire the next 27 batters she would face.  Among the 27, eight were retired via the strikeout.  She threw her 14th complete game of the season and earned her sixth win of 2013.

Game Two

In game two, Nicole Turato took the pitcher's circle for Queens and won her fourth game of the season. Her strong start included a career-high 9 strikeouts and no base on balls. Her only blemish on the nightcap of the doubleheader was an RBI double by STAC in the top of the 7th, which was the only run St. Thomas Aquinas would score on the day.

The Knights offense backed up Turato with three runs on the ten hits. Carla Pennolino, Caroline Carbone, and Sam Mattsson had consecutive RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth to give the Knights a three-run lead.

Isabelle Yaroch entered the game in the seventh and nailed down her second save of the season to preserve the 3-1 victory.

The QC softball team will travel to East Coast Conference opponent NYIT on Thursday, April 18th. First pitch of game one against the Bears is 3 PM.
