Box Score 2 Sparkill, N.Y. (March 30, 2013) - The Queens
College softball team recorded two victories in ECC doubleheader
against the STAC Spartans. Game one went the Knights way by a slim
margin of 1-0. Game two also went to QC by the score of 11-2. With
the victories, the Knights move to 5-11 overall (4-2 in East Coast
Conference).
Game
1:
In game one, Isabelle Yaroch threw a 1-0 complete game
five-hitter in the pitcher's circle. She retired six batters
by way of the strikeout, and only walked three on the day. Her only
trouble came in the bottom of the third, when STAC built a rally
loading the bases. Yaroch got out of it as she got Megan Sweezy to
ground out to Sara Schendel for the final out of the inning.
The Knights offense scored a run in the top of the first and
that was it. In the top of the fifth and sixth innings, Queens had
chances but stranded two runners each time. They mustered seven
hits off of Spartan starter Maura Power, who took her third loss of
the year. Power (3-3) also walked three Knights in her outing.
The win gave the Knights their third of the season in ECC
play.
Game
2:
In game two, the Knights offense came alive against STAC starter
Sweezy. After going down 2-0 in the first inning, the Knights
scored in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th
innings. In the seventh, Queens's offense exploded for five
runs, putting their run total at 11. QC 's offense was
ignited by four home runs. Kaitlyn Crowley, Nicole Piretti and
Carla Pennolino all hit home runs in the top of the seventh against
Sweezy (1-6). Crowley launched a solo shot in the top of the fourth
and also hit a 2-run home run in the seventh. Nicole Piretti also
yarded a two run home run in the seventh. Carla Pennolino added the
third and final home run in the seventh. The Knights got
RBI's from Melissa Natale and Cat Pastor as well. Pastor
added a run when she stole home in the fifth inning.
In the pitcher's circle, Nicole Turato recorded her second
win in a row. After giving up two first-inning runs, Turato (2-5)
settled down and held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way.
She recorded six strikeouts and only one walk in her complete game
victory.
With the win, QC moved to 4-2 on the year against ECC teams.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, April 2nd when they
host ECC opponent NYIT in Flushing, N.Y. First pitch of game one is
slated for 3 PM.
