Softball Sweeps Past Bridgeport, 5-0 and 8-2

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team received a four-RBI day from freshman outfielder Cat Franzone (Bay Shore, N.Y.) Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights swept past the University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference doubleheader, by scores of 5-0 and 8-2.

Game 1: Queens 5, Bridgeport 0

Franzone's two-run homer in the first inning provided all the run support that freshman pitcher Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.) would need on the afternoon, as the latter gave up four hits and one walk while striking out eight for her third shutout in the last eight days. Another freshman, Sara Schendel (Seattle, Wash.) smacked her first collegiate homer, a solo shot, to right-center field in the fourth inning, before scoring in the sixth frame on a double steal.

Freshman Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.), and juniors Carla Pennolino (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.) each had doubles in the contest for QC.

Game 2: Queens 8, Bridgeport 2

After falling behind by a 1-0 score in the top of the fourth inning, Queens (13-8, 6-7 ECC) unleashed an eight-run, five-hit inning in the bottom half of the frame to take control for good. Franzone (2 RBI) scored twice in the inning, while Mattsson dropped a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Breakey (2-for-3).

Sophomore Nicole Turato (Garden City, N.Y.) went the distance in the pitcher's circle for QC, scattering eight hits and one earned run while striking out five to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Interim head coach John Pisano's Knights are back in ECC action Saturday afternoon, when they welcome conference-leading Molloy College to Flushing for a 12 noon twinbill.
