Lacrosse Comeback vs. No. 8 Bentley Comes Up Just Short

Box Score

FLUSHING, N.Y. - A furious comeback attempt came up just short Sunday afternoon, as the Queens College women's lacrosse team, receiving votes in the latest IWLCA NCAA Division II Poll, scored the final six goals of the contest before falling to visiting eighth-ranked Bentley University, 9-8.

The host Knights (7-3), who trailed by a 3-0 count at halftime and 6-0 with 17:04 remaining, notched their first goal of the game with 15:46 to go when junior Kayleen Kelty (Valley Stream, N.Y.; 2 g) converted a feed from senior Meghan Monahan (Amityville, N.Y.; 2 g, 2 a). The teams then traded one goal apiece over the next minute and change, before the Falcons (10-4) scored two-consecutive goals to capture a 9-2 edge with 8:58 left.

From there, it was all Queens, as junior Melissa Montreuil (New Hyde Park, N.Y.; 3 g, 1 a, 3 gb) started a six-goal spurt to end the game with her second tally of the day at the 8:04 mark. Freshman Shannon Doody (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored with just under 7 minutes to play, before Monahan scored back-to-back goals to bring QC within a 9-6 count with 3:23 to go. Montreuil converted a pass from Doody with 2:17 remaining, before Kelty fired home a free-position shot with 57.1 seconds showing on the clock.

Junior Sarah Boucher (Oceanside, N.Y.) provided a strong midfield presence, as the nation's leader in draw controls added a game-best nine to her season total while scooping up a game-high five ground balls.

Head coach Tricia Moran Bonagura's Knights get back into East Coast Conference action Wednesday night, when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y., for a game under the lights at Molloy College. Opening draw from the Dean G. Skelos Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
