OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Freshman right-handed pitcher Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.) fired her first collegiate no-hitter Thursday afternoon, facing three batters over the minimum and striking out six en route to the Queens College softball team's 2-0, East Coast Conference victory over host New York Institute of Technology.
Yaroch issued just four walks in the contest, and started a 1-6-3 double play in the bottom of the seventh inning to help her own cause. She did not allow a runner to move past first base throughout the game.
Yaroch received all the run support she would need in the top of the sixth inning, when freshman Nicole Pirretti (E. Northport, N.Y.) clubbed a two-run homer to center field, plating junior pinch-runner Alexandra Drago (Commack, N.Y.) in the process.
Freshman Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with a walk in the leadoff position for QC, while classmate and designated player Monique Roberge (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 in the cleanup spot.
The second game of the teams' scheduled ECC twinbill was suspended due to darkness in the top of the eighth inning, with the Knights leading the host Bears by a 6-5 count. That contest will be made up from the suspension point at a date and time to be determined in the coming days.
Head coach John Pisano's Queens team (11-6, 4-5 ECC) is scheduled to get back into ECC play Saturday afternoon, when it plays host to Mercy College, weather permitting, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
