BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team wrapped up its week-long road stint by notching a split in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at East Coast Conference foe Dowling College. After the host Golden Lions won the first contest by a 2-1 count, the Knights came back with 15 hits to garner a 9-6 decision in the nightcap.
Game 1: Dowling 2, Queens 1
After DC picked up two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Queens answered back with one run in the top of the third. Junior Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and came around one batter later when freshman infielder Jennifer Shereyka (Parlin, N.J.) tripled to right field.
QC starting pitcher Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.) went the distance in the pitcher's circle, allowing just five hits and one earned run, while walking two and striking out four.
Game 2: Queens 9, Dowling 6
The Knights (8-6, 1-5 ECC) scored runs in each of the first six innings, rapping 15 hits in the process. Sophomore center fielder Melissa Natale (Yaphank, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the contest, while Shereyka (BB), Monique Roberge (Fr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Breakey (double, 2 R) each went 2-for-4. Freshmen Cat Franzone (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored two runs apiece.
Sophomore starting pitcher Nicole Turato (Garden City, N.Y.) went 4.1 innings for the victory, scattering four hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out four. Yaroch came on for the final 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks.
Interim head coach John Pisano's Knights are back in ECC action at home Tuesday afternoon, when they welcome St. Thomas Aquinas College to Flushing for a 2:30 p.m. twinbill.
