Three-Run Homers Send Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of Saint Anselm

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College softball team moved its winning streak to seven games Saturday afternoon, as the Knights used pivotal three-run home runs in both ends of a doubleheader to sweep visiting Saint Anselm College by scores of 5-1 and 5-2.

Game 1: Queens 5, Saint Anselm 1

Junior Carla Pennolino (Middle Village, N.Y.) lofted a three-run homer to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning, providing all the offense that freshman pitcher Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.; CG, 4 H, BB, 7 K) would need. Freshman Cat Franzone (Bay Shore, N.Y.; 2-for-3) scored on a two-out error in the same inning, before coming home three innings later on a RBI groundout by classmate Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Sophomore catcher Kaitlyn Crowley (Patchogue, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Queens.

Game 2: Queens 5, Saint Anselm 2

The teams traded a pair of runs in their respective portions of the first inning, with the Knights (7-1) knotting the game on Crowley's sacrifice fly and Pennolino's RBI groundout -- plating freshman Jennifer Shereyka (Parlin, N.J.) and sophomore Melissa Natale (Yaphank, N.Y.), respectively.

Queens then received some two-out magic in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Mattsson singled and junior Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.) walked. Freshman Monique Roberge (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) then stepped into the box as a pinch-hitter, and rapped a three-run homer to left field to account for the final score.

Sophomore Nicole Turato (Garden City, N.Y.) moved to 4-0 in the pitcher's circle on the season by scattering eight hits, walking one and fanning two in the process.

Interim head coach John Pisano's Queens side will kick off its East Coast Conference portion of the schedule Tuesday (Mar. 20), when it travels to Brookville, N.Y., for a 2:30 p.m. twinbill at C.W. Post.
