LYNDHURST, N.J. - The Queens College softball team moved to 3-1 on the young campaign Wednesday afternoon by notching a sweep of host Felician College by scores of 5-1 and 5-4.
Game 1: Queens 5, Felician 1
Freshman pitcher Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va.) faced just four hitters over the minimum in earning her first college victory, allowing just one hit in the sixth inning and two walks while striking out a pair. The Knights scored all five of their runs in the top of the fifth inning, including RBI singles by freshmen Monique Roberge (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a two-run double by sophomore Melissa Natale (Yaphank, N.Y.).
Natale went 2-for-4 in the contest, while freshman infielder Jennifer Shereyka (Parlin, N.J.) was 2-for-3 at the dish.
Game 2: Queens 5, Felician 4
Yaroch came on in relief of sophomore starter Nicole Turato (Garden City, N.Y.) one batter into the sixth inning and pitched two innings of one-hit, one-walk, three-strikeout ball to earn her first collegiate save.
Queens took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when junior Carla Pennolino (Middle Village, N.Y.) doubled home sophomore Kaitlyn Crowley (Patchogue, N.Y.), and came home on a base-knock by junior Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.).
The host Golden Falcons took a 4-2 lead in its half of the fourth, before Mattsson's three-run double down the left-field line plated Breakey, Roberge and Crowley to give QC the lead for good.
Pennolino was 3-for-3 batting, while Shereyka, Crowley, Breakey and Mattsson each notched one hit.
Interim head coach John Pisano's Queens side is back in action on the road Friday afternoon, when it travels to Philadelphia for a 2:30 p.m. twinbill at Chestnut Hill College.
