FLUSHING, N.Y. - Sophomore Nicole Turato (Garden City, N.Y.) fired a complete-game two-hitter with four strikeouts Tuesday afternoon, while freshman infielder Jennifer Shereyka (Parlin, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the Queens College softball team's 5-1 victory over visiting Bloomfield College in the nightcap of the Knights' season-opening doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
The visiting Deacons earned a 3-0 win in the opening contest.
Junior Carla Pennolino (Middle Village, N.Y.) went a combined 4-for-5 in the doubleheader for QC.
Game 1: Bloomfield 3, Queens 0
Pennolino (2-for-3) and freshman Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had a double for the Knights, who rapped five hits overall in the contest. Sophomore Kaitlyn Crowley (Patchogue, N.Y.) and junior Caroline Carbone (E. Williston, N.Y.) each had a base-knock.
Game 2: Queens 5, Bloomfield 1
Shereyka singled to lead off the bottom of the first, and came around on Pennolino's hit to center field to knot the game at 1-all.
Mattsson provided the eventual game-winning single in the fourth frame, when she drove home Pennolino and freshman Cat Franzone (Bay Shore, N.Y.) on a rip down the left-field line.
Franzone doubled home Pennolino in the fifth, while freshman Nicole Pirretti (E. Northport, N.Y.) brought in Shereyka on a single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning in support of Turato.
Head coach John Pisano's Knights are back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Lyndhurst, N.J., to take on Felician College in a 2:30 p.m. twinbill.
