DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Bryttne Santana scattered six hits in the pitching circle, while she, Catherine Pastor and Kaitlyn Crowley drove in two runs apiece Saturday afternoon at Smith Field, as they lifted the Queens College softball team (23-24, 12-15 ECC) won the opening game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Mercy College, 6-3. The host Mavericks (20-21, 14-14 ECC) captured the nightcap, 5-3.
Game 1: Queens 6, Mercy 3
Pastor and Santana (2-for-4) ripped two-run homers three batters apart from each other in a five-run third inning for the Knights, before Crowley (3-for-4) drove in Anniela Vaccaro for the second time on the afternoon in the fifth frame.
Mercy plated two runners in the seventh inning to pull closer, but to no avail.
Allison Breakey went 3-for-4 with a run scored from the leadoff spot for Queens, while Samantha Stallone went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Game 2: Mercy 5, Queens 3
Queens got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Melissa Natale (2-for-3, 2 R) and Caroline Carbone hit back-to-back doubles, before Mercy scored two in their half of the stanza.
After the Mavericks increased their lead to 3-1 in the third inning, the Knights responded with single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to knot the score at 3-all. In the fourth inning, Natale ripped a one-out solo home run. In the fifth, Crowley doubled home Pastor to tie the score.
Mercy plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to account for the final score and clinch the fourth and final spot in the upcoming ECC Championships.
