SPARKILL, N.Y. – Bryttne Santana fired a complete-game five-hitter Wednesday afternoon, as the Queens College softball team took the opening contest of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas College, 3-0. The host Spartans then earned a split by taking the nightcap, 4-0.
Game 1: Queens 3, St. Thomas Aquinas 0
The visiting Knights (22-23, 11-14 ECC) got on the board with a single run in the first inning, when Catherine Pastor (3-for-4) scored on a single by Anniela Vaccaro to give QC the lead for good.
Queens tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, when Santana's (1-for-3) single plated Caroline Carbone (1-for-3), and Vaccaro's sacrifice fly plated Allison Breakey (1-for-4).
Kaitlyn Crowley also went 1-for-3 in the victory, while Santana issued just two walks and struck out four in the pitcher's circle.
Game 2: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Queens 0
The Knights left 11 players on base, and while starting pitcher Julia Carbone allowed just four hits in her outing, two were home runs by Megan Sweezy to account for all four Spartans (14-21, 9-13 ECC) runs.
Sweezey hit a three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the second inning, before adding a solo shot in the fourth frame.
For Queens, Breakey and Vaccaro each went 2-for-4 at the dish, while Crowley, Melissa Natale, Carla Pennolino and Caroline Carbone all had one hit apiece.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Knights are scheduled to wrap up their season Saturday afternoon, as they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., for a pivotal noontime doubleheader at Mercy that could potentially affect both teams' prospects for next week's four-team, East Coast Conference Championships.
