BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Senior pitcher Bryttne Santana fired four innings of five-hit, seven-strikeout softball Friday afternoon, and helped herself at the plate with a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance as the Queens College softball team won the opening game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at the University of Bridgeport Friday afternoon, 12-4 in five innings. The host Purple Knights captured the nightcap by a 3-0 count.
Game 1: Queens 12, Bridgeport 4 (5 inn.)
Santana, Allison Breakey (2-for-3) and Kaitlyn Crowley (3B, 2 R, 2 BB) drove in two runs apiece in the mercy-rule-shortened contest for the Knights (20-20, 9-11 ECC). Anniela Vaccaro went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Catherine Pastor scored twice. Senior Samantha Stallone notched her ECC-leading 30th stolen base in the contest, as well.
Queens broke open a 1-1 game in the fourth inning by plating eight runs, with Crowley's two-run triple providing the most damage. After Bridgeport (7-27, 2-18 ECC) got back two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, the Knights tacked on three more in the top of the fifth frame to put the contest out of reach – including a two-run single by Santana.
Game 2: Bridgeport 3, Queens 0
The Knights rapped eight hits against UB's Tiffany Irrera, but were unable to convert on the scoreboard. Carla Pennolino and Breakey both went 2-for-3 for Queens, which loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning before an infield grounder ended the visitors' rally attempt.
Julia Carbone allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk in 4.1 innings pitched for the Knights, while Santana fired 1.2 innings of two-hit, three-strikeout relief.
