FLUSHING, N.Y. – Pitchers Felicia Mendoza and Jessie Stavola combined to allow just five hits Saturday afternoon, as 19th-ranked Dowling College swept host Queens College in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader by scores of 4-0 and 4-1, respectively. QC sophomore Anniela Vaccaro ripped a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning of the nightcap for the Knights.
Game 1: Dowling 4, Queens 0
Mendoza faced just three batters over the minimum for the Golden Lions, walking one and striking out seven. The Knights' lone hit of the contest came from Catherine Pastor, who ripped a leadoff single up the middle in the bottom of the third inning. She advanced to third two batters later, which was the closest QC was able to get on the base paths to breaking through.
For Queens, Faith Tessmer threw 71 of her 108 pitches for strikes, going the distance in the pitching circle and scattering six hits, five walks with one strikeout. Offensively, Vaccaro drew a walk in the first inning, while Tessmer and Samantha Stallone each had one sacrifice.
Game 2: Dowling 4, Queens 1
Stavola struck out 16 batters for the Golden Lions (18-2, 4-0 ECC), while the visitors hit three home runs (two by Emily Slack) to account for all their scoring.
Kristen Weeks hit a two-run homer in the second inning to provide all the offense Stavola needed, while Slack belted solo shots in the fourth and sixth innings.
Vaccaro slammed a two-out homer to left on a 3-1 pitch in the bottom of the sixth to get Queens (12-10, 3-3 ECC) on the board. Melissa Natale and Carla Pennolino hit one double each for the Knights, while starting pitcher Bryttne Santana (6 IP, 5 H) allowed all four runs (three earned) to go with five strikeouts in the losing effort.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's QC squad is scheduled to be back in action Monday afternoon, as they travel for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Nyack.
